LTIO responds to plans to axe funding for the React-1 infection surveillance study and other Covid research projects

The Chair of the Laboratory and Testing Industry Organisation (LTIO), Tom Watson, said:

“The cancellation of funding for the globally-recognised React-1 study effectively calls to a close the UK’s early-warning system for Covid-19 variants. While there is still the potential for dangerous new variants to enter the country, there continues to be a need for surveillance testing. By abandoning all tracking and testing from the end of this month, the country is left exposed. This seems particularly poorly timed as we have begun to see Covid infections rising in people aged 55 and over. Many scientists are alarmed and deeply concerned at the lack of caution shown by the Government.”
